Surprising Hospital Leadership Trends

Our nation’s demographics have intensely shifted over the past two decades. However, there is still a lack of representation of minority leadership in our nation’s hospitals. Read more about three surprising leadership trends in the United States below.

  1.  According to the American Hospital Association’s National Healthcare Governance Study, “47% of not-for-profit hospital governing boards had no racial or ethnic minorities in 2013.” A shocking 9 out of 10 members are Caucasian, which has remained unchanged since 2011. Now more than ever, diversity initiatives have to be a top priority among hospitals to guarantee minorities are rightfully represented.
  2. In 2014, women only made up 28% of hospital and health system c-suite hires. Additionally, compensation for female executives is on average 35% lower than their male counterparts. While the study claims that women typically have a greater sense of satisfaction than men because they feel their work is contributing to society, compensation still is a critical component.
  3. According to a 2013 study, physicians made up 14% of c-suite hires. This trend is not too surprising as the emphasis on clinical quality continues to be a major goal for hospitals.
